Today, we travel approximately 55 km from the center of Ulaanbaatar to Tsonjin Boldog, home to the world’s tallest equestrian statue — the impressive 40-meter stainless steel monument of Chinggis Khaan on horseback. According to legend, this is the place where Temujin discovered his golden whip, a moment associated with the beginning of his rise to greatness. Visitors can ascend through the chest and neck of the horse statue to reach the viewing platform, where sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding Mongolian steppe unfold in every direction. Following the visit, we begin our cycling journey with a sense of pride and purpose, riding into the vast Mongolian landscape. By evening, we arrive at the “13th Century” themed Ger Camp, where we settle in for the night.

Today’s cycling route combines both paved and off-road terrain. After breakfast, we travel approximately 18 km by support vehicle to the starting point, where the bicycles will be ready for the day’s ride. From here, we cycle through a constantly changing Mongolian landscape, moving between forests, open steppe, and gently rolling mountain terrain. Along the route, we pass the shores of two small lakes before continuing toward our riverside accommodation on the banks of the Kherlen River. The Kherlen River is closely associated with the early life of Chinggis Khaan, who is said to have lived and watered his horses along its banks. At the end of the day, we settle into the Ger Camp beside the river and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Mongolian countryside.

Today, we arrive at our long-awaited destination, Khar Zurkh Khukh Nuur — the Blue Lake of Black Heart, a place of profound historical significance. According to Mongolian history, it was here, 837 years ago, that Temujin was proclaimed “Chinggis Khaan” and enthroned as the Great Khan of all Mongols, marking the birth of the Mongol Empire. This sacred and deeply revered landscape invites us to slow down and appreciate the significance of the destination we have reached by bicycle. As the sun sets over the lake, the peaceful waters and surrounding landscape create a memorable atmosphere. Waterbirds can be seen gliding across the surface, adding to the quiet beauty of this historically important place.

Take time to rest along the shores of the lake, immerse yourself in its historical significance, and enjoy a mindful walk into the surrounding hills. On the shores of the lake stands a memorial complex commemorating the 840th anniversary of the birth of Chinggis Khaan. The complex is surrounded by a semi-circular plaza measuring 108 meters in diameter, decorated with wooden carvings representing the 36 khans of the Golden Lineage who ruled Mongolia. At the center of the complex stand Chinggis Khaan, his father Yesukhei, his mother Oelun, and his principal queen Borte-Ujin. In total, the site features 50 intricately carved wooden statues, creating a meaningful tribute to Mongolia’s imperial lineage and heritage.
